Appleby, Arthur Harold
TASMANIAN CASUALTIES. PERSONAL NOTES. Notification has been received of the death of Captain A. Harold Appleby, who was killed in action in France. Deceased was formerly a member of the Derwent Regiment, and on enlisting was given the commission of second-lieutenant, and left here in charge of the 7th reinforcements. He served in Egypt and on Gallipoli until the evacuation. He subsequently received the rank of captain, and an appointment in the Training Battalion,, but he preferred active service at the front, where he made the supreme sacrifice. In civil life he was employed by Messrs. Blundstone and Sons, on the clerical staff. He was a prominent lacrosse player, and put up many a tough fight for the Moonah Club. He was the elder son of the late Mr Arthur Appleby, of the Tasmanian railway staff, and brother of Corporal A. Appleby, who is serving at the front. He was a resident of the New Town district, and was greatly respected. The Mercury 28th May 1917
