Arthur, Lionel Thomas John
(Pte) Lionel Thomas John Arthur, 7th Reinforcements, 12th Battalion, of Longford, Tas (kneeling front row). He is wearing a lance corporal's stripe and may have been appointed temporarily to this rank. Pte Arthur enlisted on 1 July 1915 and embarked aboard HMAT Persia in Melbourne on 10 August 1915. He was killed in action, aged forty, on 23 July 1916, at Pozieres, France. His death is commemorated at the Villers Bretonneux Memorial in France. Pte Arthur is also identified in images DA09779 and DA09789; Sincere regret was expressed on every side when it became known that Mr. Monty Arthur had received word that his brother, Leo Arthur had been killed in action in France. The deceased had been a resident of Stoodley district for many years before enlisting. He was of a cheerful and loveable disposition — one of nature's gentlemen. The flag at the Stoodley School was flown at half mast out of sympathy for the deceased's relatives. The North Western Advocate 19th August 1916
