Atkins, George Ernest

 

 Born 17th July 1895 Clarence Tasmania to Charles Lewis and Ellen Elizabeth Atkins (nee Ford) a Waiter who departed Melbourne 5th January 1916 on board “HMAT Afric” with the 12th Infantry Battalion.

He was first listed missing in action which was later changed to killed in action 19th August 1916 and commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France

F.N. Lewis 4327 stated

We went over the top together at Moquet Farm where he was hit with shrapnel and that was the end of him.  He died instantly.  I knew him well as he lived near me at Lindisfarne.”   

His brother, Pte Frederick John Atkins of the 26th Infantry Battalion was also killed in action
