Axton, Albert

 

Born 1890 Nile Tasmania the son of James and Martha Axton (nee McKinnell) a farm labourer he embarked Melbourne 17th July 1915 on board “HMAT Orsova” with the

 

He was killed in action 5th August 1916 at Pozieres in France and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, France

 

Mr J Axton of the Nile received a telegram last week from the Defence Department stating his son, Driver L. Axton, was ill and had disembarked at Malta. Driver Axton went to Egypt with the first expeditionary force in the 9th Battery. Mr. Axton also received it wire on Friday to say that his second son, Private A. Axton was wounded slightly, and had disembarked at Malta. Private Axton went with the second reinforcements to the 20th Battalion, so has not been long in action. He enlisted from The Nile where his parents reside.
