Bain Alec Lewis

 

 

 

Born 18th July 1895 Launceston Tasmania the son of Lewis Edward and Mildred Mary Bain (nee Cox) a warehouseman he embarked Melbourne 10th November 1914 on board “HMAT Ascanius” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. 

He was with the 92nd Infantry for 4 years and enlisted Claremont 30th July 1915, saw service in Egypt and arrived in France June 1916.  He was appointed Lance Corporal 9th June 1916. 

Lance Corporal Bain was serving with the 52nd Battalion when he was killed in action 3rd September 1916 at Moquet Farm France and is commemorated in the Pozieres British Cemetery Ovillers-La Boisselle, Pozieres, Pozieres Area, France

Mr. L. E. Bain, of J. and T. Gunn, Ltd. has been officially advised that his son, Sergeant Alex Bain, has been killed in action in France between September 3 and 5. The young Launceston soldier was 21 years of age, and Mr. Bain's youngest son, he was prior to enlistment employed at D. and W. Murray's warehouse where he was most popular amongst the employees at which his death will occasion sincere sorrow. A brother, Sergt Clyde Bain, of the artillery, is a present in hospital in England recovering from wounds received in France.
