Thankyou from Gravesites of Tasmania in advance.

Bald, Joseph John

Studio portrait of 1051 Private (Pte) (later Corporal (Cpl)) Joseph John Bald, 12th Battalion, of Scottsdale, Tas. A painter before enlisting on 17 September 1914, Pte Bald embarked from Hobart with A Company on HMAT Geelong on 20 October 1914. He was killed in action in France on 19 August 1916, at the age of 21.

Amongst Tasmanins lately killed in France was Joe Bald son of Mr John Bald of Scottsdale.  The lad, who was 21 years of age went from Tasmania with the first troops.  He was in the never to be forgotten landing at Gallipoli, he and his mates swam ashore and Bald remained until the evacuation.  Afterwards he did splendid work in France.  His only spell was a 10 days rest in England.  Joe Bald was one of those young fellows who made a point of assisting their parents.
