Barden, Walter James

 

 

Born 22nd September 1886 Bothwell Tasmania to Joseph James and Eliza Barden (nee Patience) a labourer who departed Hobart 1st July 1916 on board “HMAT Berrima” with the 40th Infantry Battalion.

 He was killed in action at Ploegsteert Wood 30th April 1917 and is commemorated in the Strand Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Mr J J Barden of Bothwell has been officially advised that his eldest son Pte Walter James Barden of the 40th Battalion was killed in action in France on April 30th. Private Barden left Tasmania 10 months ago.  “Joe” as he was generally called was a fine big Tasmanian and a general favourite.  They sympathy of the district goes out to the parents in their sad loss.  Another son (Private Alfred Barden) is fighting somewhere in France at the present time.
