Barker, James Russell
Born 11th April 1898 Campbell Town Tasmania the son of Robert and Mary Jane Barker (nee McGillivray) a labourer he embarked Melbourne 6th December 1916 on board “HMAT Orsova” with the 40th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action 31st August 1918 in France and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Villers-Bretonneux Area, France. On Monday the Rev P Hope had the painful duty of conveying the sad news to Mr and Mrs Robert Barker, Cleveland that their fourth son, Private James Russell Barker had been killed in action on the 31st August. Only a few days before, they had received letters from their son also a medal which had been awarded him. The medal is of white metal inscribed on one side “for skill with the Army Rifle Association, British Armies in France,” also the name of the recipient. On the opposite side is engraved the Angel of Peace. It is a memento that will always be treasured. Mr and Mrs Barker have every reason to be proud of their sons, three having enlisted. The second son (winner of the Military Medal) was invalided home a short time ago while the third is still in France. The deepest sympathy goes out to them in their bereavement.
