Bates, Charles
He was born Hobart Tasmania the son of Thomas Bates of 145 Collins Street Hobart, a painter who embarked Fremantle 19th April 1915 on board “HMAT Argyllshire” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. Lance Corporal Bates was serving with the 52nd Battalion and on 28th June 1917 had his section at live bomb throwing when he was hit be a late exploding bomb, dying about 10 minutes later. He was buried in the Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension (Nord), France.
