Bellchambers, Hector Roy

Born 12th February 1893 Chudleigh Tasmania the son of George Edward and Maria Jane Bellchambers (nee How) a blacksmith he embarked Melbourne 18th February 1916 on board “HMAT Ballarat” with the 12th Infantry Battalion.

He died 7th July 1916 at the 13th Australian Field Ambulance from shrapnel wounds to the eye and ear and was buried in the Sailly-sur-la-Lys Canadian Cemetery.

Our Wesley Vale correspondent writes Sincere regret was felt in this district when it became known that Hector Bellchambers had died from wounds received at the front. The deeased soldier was well known in the district having worked for some time in his brother's black smith's shop. He was a fine athletic young fellow, and well liked. Since his parents were notified of his death they have received a letter which he had written to them 20 days bfore the date of his death. In it he expressed great pleasure at having left Egypt, and at being in France. At the time he wrote he was six miles behind the firing line, and gave a vivid description of shells bursting around the enemy's Zeppelins during a raid he had witnessed.
