If you could spare a few dollars to help with the running costs of hosting this website to keep it alive would be very much appreciated.

Thankyou from Gravesites of Tasmania in advance.

Benger, John Desmond

Born 5th December 1896 Launceston Tasmania to Jonathon William and Mary Elizabeth Benger (nee Rose) a shop assistant who departed Fremantle 26th June 1915 on board “HMAT Wandilla” with the 12th Infantry Battalion.

Lance Corporal Benger was serving with the 52nd Battalion when he died 29th August 1917 from wounds received in the field.  He was buried in the Trois Arbres Cemetery, Steenwerck, France.

Word has been received in Launceston to the effect that Private J Desmond Benger was killed in action in France on August 31.  The deceased saw service in Gallipoli where he was shot through the face.  With his battalion he went through a good deal of the fighting in France until he was unfortunate enough to contract trench feet.  On his recovery he returned to France and met his death.  Prior to enlistment Pte Benger was employed at Ruston’s store, South Launceston and left Tasmania in June 1915.  His parents now reside in Hobart.
