Portrait of 1503 Private (Pte) Jack Erol Benson, farmer, of Riverton, Tasmania. He enlisted in the 12th Battalion on 3 December 1914 and embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Clan McGillivray on 2 February 1915 for Gallipoli. He was wounded in action on the first occasion on 20 May 1915 and was treated in Alexandria, Egypt, before rejoining his unit on 22 June 1915. Pte Benson was wounded in action on a second occasion on 7 August 1915 and died of his wounds in hospital in Alexandria on 3 September 1915, aged 18 years.
