Born 1st February 1896 Hobart Tasmania to William and Lucy Jane Best (nee Plaister) a draper who embarked Melbourne 17th January 1917 on board RMS Omrah with the Australian Flying Corps, No 4 Squadron.

 

Lieutenant Best was serving with the 3rd Squadron, Australian Flying Corps when he was killed in action on April 12 and was later buried in Vignacourt British Cemetery.

 

He was killed in a flying accident at Poulainville Aerodrome – there was engine failure when he took off and he crashed – the plane burst into flames and he was burnt to death.
