Blackwood, Gordon

 

Born 1896 Sorell Tasmania the son of Alfred Jerram and Evelina Blackwood (nee Kingston) a driver he embarked Fremantle 26th June 1915 on board “HMAT Wandilla” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. 

On the 3rd May 1917 he was promoted to Corporal. 

He was killed in action 24th July 1918 in France and is commemorated in the Borre British Cemetery, Hazebrouck, Nord, France. 

Mrs. T. G. Tunbridge of Copping has been notified of the death of her brother, Corporal Gordon Blackwood killed in action on July 24, after three years and three months on active service. He entered Claremont camp on the 25th May, 1915, and left with the 6th Reinforcements of the 12th Battalion. He saw service in the Gallipoli campaign until the evacuation, and from there he was sent to Suez, and was amongst the first transferred to France. He remained with the 1st Australian Division in the A.L.T.M. Battery until he was killed. He was never absent during this period of service from   his unit for a single day. He was very popular in the district.
