WW1
BOND, FRANCIS JOHN
Studio portrait of 4763 Private (Pte) Francis John Bond, 12th Battalion, of Ranelagh, Tas. A labourer prior to enlistment, Pte Bond embarked with the 15th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Ballarat on 18th February 1916. Between the 6th and 10th April 1917 he was killed in action in France and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. His two brothers, 2011 Pte Richard Bond and 2901 Pte William Bond were also killed in action
Last of the Bond brothers Private Hugh Bond of Judbury is at Devonport Military Hospital with a severely injured knee. Private Bond had three brothers killed on active service and this circumstance being brought under the notice of General Haig he ordered that the only surviving son should be sent home realising that the Bond family had done more than their share. Misfortune, however, dogged the footsteps of the young Huonite as the transport on which he was returning was torpedoed when only 24 hours out and Private Bond received the injuries to his knee which at present necessitate his detention in hospital. He finally returned to Tasmania two months later on 4th December 1918
