Burney, Bennett
Born Devonport Tasmania the son of George Bennett and Alice Burney (nee Donaldson) a gardener living in East Wynyard he embarked Sydney 14th June 1917 on board “HMAT Hororata” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. He was serving with the 40th Battalion when he was killed in action 22nd April 1918 in France and is commemorated in the Mericourt-L'Abbe Communal Cemetery Extension, France. Official information has been communicated by the Rev. R. Bruce M'Conchia to Mr.and Mrs. B. Burney, of East Wynyard, that their son, Pte Bennett Burney, was killed in action on April 23. Deceased was only a young fellow, and was well known and greatly liked in Wynyard.
