Burt, Walter
Born 11th December 1892 Richmond Tasmania to John and Martha Burt (nee Cornish) a labourer who departed Hobart 8th August 1916 on board “HMAT Ballarat” with the 40th Infantry Battalion. He was wounded in action 13th January 1917 at Armentieres, gassed on the 4th June 1917 at Messines and was killed in action 15th June 1917. He is commemorated in the Kandahar Farm Cemetery, Belgium. Lieut. R. E. D. Groom writing from France on June 20 to relatives of the late Private Walter Burt (brother of Mr. Thomas Burt, Charles Street, Sandy Bay), says “ It is with deep regret that I have to write to you of your son's death. He was killed by a shell while asleep on June 15 and I am afraid never knew anything about it. His mates had a narrow shave while sleeping with him but escaped, only one of the other five boys being shell shocked. I beg to convey my deep sympathy in your bereavement. The lad is greatly missed by his comrades and by me. Ho was one of my best boys. His name is worthy of the roll of honour and he will rest, as so many of our fine lads have done, leaving a good name behind him, and his and your sacrifice will not be in vain in the end, which should come soon. His grave will have every attention. He is buried between Neuve Eglice and Messines. With all sympathy for you Yours sincerely, R. E. D. Groom, Lieutenant. The Mercury 12th September 1917
