Butler Herbert

 

 Informal portrait of five soldiers, all relatives, members of an extended Tasmanian family. Identified left to right: 3126 Private (Pte) Herbert Butler who originally enlisted in the 12th Battalion along with a number of his relatives who are also in this photograph. Pte Herbert Butler was transferred to the 52nd Battalion when the AIF was re-organised before the infantry battalions were sent to France in 1916; he was promoted to Corporal on 26 May 1916 and killed in action at Mouquet Farm in France on 4 September 1916. 3120 Sergeant (Sgt) Morton Linthorne Butler, 12th Battalion and also transferred to the 52nd Battalion; he was evacuated sick from France, eventually repatriated to Australian and discharged from the AIF on 18 September 1917 with a "dilated action of the heart". 2277 Private Alexander James Peebles, 26th Battalion; was twice wounded in action in fighting in France and awarded the Military Medal for bravery at Mont St Quentin. 3119 Sgt Charles Henry Butler, 12th Battalion; later a Corporal in the 52nd Battalion. He was killed in action at Pozieres in France on 4 September 1916. The soldier on the right is unidentified.P06456.005
