Butler, Gerald Bertram
Born 4th December 1895 Campbell Town Tasmania the son of John and Isabella Butler (nee Nelson) a school teacher he embarked Hobart 20th October 1914 on board “HMAT Geelong” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. He served at Gallipoli and was promoted to Corporal and on the 18th December 1915 at Mudros was again promoted to Sergeant. On the 25th March 1916 he was charged with being drunk and resisting arrest and was reduced to the ranks.
He was serving with the 52nd Battalion when he was killed in action 10th August1916 at Pozieres in France where he was hit by shellfire in a communication trench. He is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux France Constable John Butler of Alonnah, Bruny Island, has received official notification that his son, Gerald Bertram Butler, has been missing since August 14. Gerald was a Training College student of considerable promise, and at the senior public examination in December 1912, obtained seven passes (English, modern history, Latin, arithmetic, geometry, chemistry, and drawing). Soon after the outbreak of war, when only 18 years of age, he joined the 12th Battalion, which suffered such severe losses on the Gallipoli Peninsula that it had ultimately to be disbanded.
