France, 11/7/17 Dear Mrs Butters, -It grieves me very much to have to report the loss of your husband who was killed in action on the afternoon of the 10th inst. An aeroplane bomb exploded in the stables where he had his quarters From what I have been able to gather he was standing in the door of his sleeping quarters when the bomb dropped by a German aeroplane burst and a small fragment hit him right over the heart and death was practically instantaneous The group medical officer was there within a minute and pronounced life extinct. Your husband was buried today in a cemetery near ---- which is a small village between Dunkirk and Nieunoit, about a mile from the seashore. My staff will see that a cross is placed at the head of the grave. All the officers N C O's and men who could be spared attended his burial. The bomb that caused your husband’s death also wounded three other men and two horses and one horse has also died- I am yours, in deepest sympathy, Lieut Col Hurst" The Mercury 21st September 1917
