Cairns, James Arthur
Born 1895 Latrobe Tasmania the son of James and Lilian Isabel Cairns (nee McGuire) a miner he embarked Hobart 20th October 1914 on board “HMAT Geelong” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. He was wounded on the Gallipoli Peninsula 25th April 1915 and lost a finger on his right hand so was invalided back to Australia 8th October 1915. He re embarked 10th February 1917 on board “HMAT Seang Bee” and joined the 12th Battalion 20th October 1917. He was killed in action 17th April 1918 in France and is commemorated in the Borre British Cemetery, Hazebrouck, Nord Pas de Calais, France. Mr J Cairns of Ross has received a cable from the Defence Department announcing the death in action of his son Pte J Cairns in France. Pte Cairns had been previously wounded and returned to Tasmania. He returned to the front later. The sad news was broken to the deceased’s father by the Rev Lynch (rector pro-tem of St John’s Ross) who at the close of Sunday nights service made reference to the sad event.
