Carey, Norman Samuel
Born 14th February 1889 Sheffield Tasmania to John and Mary Ann Carey (nee Shaw) a draper who embarked Hobart 1st July 1916 on board “HMAT Berrima” with the 40th Infantry Battalion. He was appointed Corporal 9th January 1917 at Larkhill his final promotion being to Sergeant 20th October 1917. He was killed in action 28th March 1918 and was buried Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L'Abbe, France. His brother Driver Mervyn Laurence Carey (24385) was also killed in action 16th September 1917 in Belgium. Mrs. J. Carey, of West Kentish, has been advised by the Base Records Office that her son Sergt. N. Carev, of the 40th Battalion, was killed in action in France on March 28. Sergt. Carey who was only 29 years of age was well known on the Coast, and for many years was on the staff of the 'Advocate' and 'Times.' This is the second son of the family to lay down his life for his country, the first being Pte. L. Carey, who was killed in the fighting in Belgium on Sept. I6 of last year. They were brothers of Mr. W G Carey of Devonport. The North Western Advocate 16th April 1918
