Studio portrait of 4469 Private (Pte) Thomas Richard Carroll, 14th Reinforcements, 12th Battalion, of Irish Town, Tas. Pte Carroll enlisted on 25 September 1915 and embarked aboard HMAT Warilda on 8 February 1916. On 4 September 1916 he was killed in action at Mouquet Farm in the Pozieres area of France, while serving with the 52nd Battalion. His brother 4470 Richard Thomas Carroll, who enlisted with him and was serving in the same unit, was also killed in action on the same day at Mouquet Farm.

Notification has been received by Mr T J Carroll of Irish Town of the loss of his son Tom, previously reported missing but now reported killed in action.  This is the second son Mr Carroll has lost in the service of his country.  Both were fine, steady manly young fellows, honoured and respected by all.  Mr Carroll was informed through the Red Cross about three weeks ago of his loss but this is the first official notice from the Defence Department.
