Challen, William Augustus

 

 

 

 

Born 11th August 1891 Hildenborough Kent England the son of George and Blanch Margeretta Challen (nee Blaxall) he emigrated to Tasmania in 1914 and was employed as a footman on the staff of the Governor General of Tasmania the Rt Hon Sir William Ellison-Macartney KCMG.  He embarked Melbourne 24th October 1915 on board RMS Orontes with the 12th Infantry Battalion with the rank of Acting Corporal.  He was appointed Lance Corporal 26th July 1916.

 

He was killed in action 19th August 1916 at Moquet Farm France when he was hit in the head by a sniper’s bullet and was buried where he fell.   He is commemorated in the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux
