Chapman, John

Born Towlaw Durham England the son of George Chapman of 19 Stowe Street Middlesborough England a railway porter he embarked Melbourne 22nd December 1914 on board “HMAT Ceramic” with the 15th Infantry Battalion.

He was killed in action 9th May 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsula and is commemorated in Quinn's Post Cemetery, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey

Among Saturday list of Tasmanians killed in action appears the name of Private J. Chapman, of the 15th Battalion.

Private Chapman, who was well known in Scottsdale by the familiar soubriquet of “Little Jock” was employed at the Scottsdale railway station and enlisted here. He was a fine specimen of manhood, well over 6 feet in height and not afraid of anything. In fact, he was often spoiling for a fight and was the type of man to be right in the thick of it at the front. He had only been in the State a few months. His parents reside in England, and the sympathy of the people here will go out to them in their loss.
