Cheek, William Martin
He was born Evandale Tasmania the son of John William Cheek, a government employee who embarked Melbourne 24th November 1914 on board “RMS Orontes” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. He was serving with the 4th Brigade Machine Gun Company when he died 27th July 1916 from shell wounds received at Pozieres France and was buried in the Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, France. Mr and Mrs Cheek of Evandale have been officially notified that their son, Corporal William M Cheek died of wounds in France on July 27th. He had previously been reported missing. Corporal Cheek was educated at Launceston High and Church Grammar schools and at time of enlistment, July 1915, he was employed at the Office of Taxes, Launceston. While in Egypt he passed as sergeant for machine gun and was offered a position there as permanent instructor but he declined the appointment and decided to proceed to the fighting line in France with his comrades. He was 19 years old when he landed in France. The Weekly Courier 21st September 1916
