Clarke, William Edward
Born 11th February 1893 Latrobe Tasmania the son of John William and Catherine Matilda Clarke (nee Tyler) a miner he embarked Melbourne 2nd February 1915 on board “HMAT Clan McGillivray” with the 15th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action 9th August 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsula and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey The Venerable Archdeacon Beechinor had the painful duty of breaking the news to Mr and Mrs John Clarke “Spring Burn” Latrobe that their eldest son Private William E Clarke was killed in action at the Dardanelles on August 9th. Private Clarke enlisted from the West Coast with Private Gordon Poole. He was very popular amongst his companions and was a favourite with all who knew him. The news of his death cast a gloom over Latrobe and much sympathy is felt for the bereaved family. The Weekly Courier 21st October 1915
