WW1
Clifton, Leslie David
Born 2nd Aug 1893 Beaconsfield Tasmania to Thomas John and Annie Clifton (nee Batchelor and was listed as a farmer. He departed Hobart 1st. July 1916 on HMAT Berrima with the 40th Infantry Battalion and was killed in action 10th February 1918.
Mrs. Clifton of Woodstock has received a letter from Lieut. J. G. Cranswick, 40th Battalion, conveying the sympathy of himself and of his platoon in the loss of her son Leslie. Lieut. Cranswick, says.- "I thought it might be some consolation to you to know in what high esteem he was held by his mates. I cannot speak too highly of his manly principles and as a soldier he was all that one could wish for. He was next on the list for promotion at the time of his death and would certainly have had it long before had he not been wounded and evacuated to hospital. He was killed instantly by concussion of a shell which dropped just in front of his dugout. It is the wish of the platoon that his grave should be decorated with something more than the small cross supplied by the military but as we were moved from the locality shortly afterwards, we have not yet been able to attend to the matter." The Mercury 21st August 1918
