COCKERILL, CHARLES CAHILL

DA11862

Studio portrait of 1523 Private (Pte) Charles Cahill Cockerill, 11th Reinforcements, 3rd Light Horse Regiment, of Patersonia, Tas. Pte Cockerill enlisted on 25 August 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Hawkes Bay on 28 October 1915. He was killed in action on 12 August 1916 at Albert, France, whilst serving with the 19th Battery, 22nd Field Artillery Brigade. His only brother, 3285 Pte Francis Douglas Cockerill, 5th Pioneer Battalion, was killed in action on 12 August 1916 at Pozieres, France

The news recently received of the death in action of Private Charlie Cockerill has just been followed by the intimation of his brother Driver Douglas (Dug) Cockerill has likewise fought until the death for all he held dear.  During their long residence at Queenstown the two lads named were most popular with their school mates and work chums and many are the expressions of regret that such fine boys should be called away so early in their promising career.  Deepest sympathy is felt for Mr and Mrs Cockerill and their daughter Madge whilst a strong feeling of pride in the bravery of the young soldiers brightens the otherwise deep sorrow
