Corney, William John
Born 21st August 1895 Green Ponds Tasmania the son of Clarence Augustus and Lucy Jane Corney (nee Clinch) a farmer he embarked Melbourne 24th November 1915 on board “HMAT Orontes” with the 12th Infantry Battalion, He was killed in action 19th August 1916 and is commemorated in the Courcelette British Cemetery, Courcelette, Pozieres Area, France Our Alonnah correspondent writes:- "Another brave young life the fourth of whom the oldest was but 22 has rendered the 'supreme sacrifice' in the Empire's cause born South Bruny in the person of Private William Corney, 12th Battalion, second son of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Corney of Lunawanna, who was killed in action in France on or about August 21, at the age of 21. The deceased soldier enlisted in August of last year and left Tasmania in October or November following. The deepest sympathy is felt for the family. Arthur Corney, another of Mr and Mr Corney's sons is serving with the 40th Battalion." The Mercury 30th September 1916
