 Robert Henry Charles Cornwall

Born Hurleyville New Zealand the son of Amos Cornwall a stockman he embarked Hobart 1st July 1916 on board “HMAT Berrima” with the 40th Infantry Battalion.

 

He was killed in action 4th February 1917 at Armentieres France and is commemorated on the Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, Lille, France.

 

The Rev. H. J. Gauntlett of Wynyard was the bearer on Saturday of the sad news to Mr. and Mrs. A. Cornwall of Somerset that their son; Pte. R. H. C. Cornwall of .the 40th Battalion had been officially reported killed in action on the 4th February. The remainder of the message to Mr Gauntlett read as follows:-:— ''Please convey deepest regret and sympathy of Their Majesties, the King and Queen and Commonwealth Government, as well as District Commandant in loss sustained by them and Army.”

 

Private Cornwall was only 21 years of age, and left Melbourne with the 40th last July. The sympathy of the district is extended to Mr. and Mrs Cornwall in their loss.
