If you could spare a few dollars to help with the running costs of hosting this website to keep it alive would be very much appreciated.

Thankyou from Gravesites of Tasmania in advance.

Counsel, Wilfred John

Born Branxholm Tasmania the son of Richard Counsel, a farmer he departed Melbourne 22nd December 1914 on board “HMAT Ceramic” with the 15th Infantry Battalion

Sgt Counsel was serving with the 4th Coy Machine Gun Company when he was killed in action 11th April 1917 at Bullecourt and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.

Another Branxholm lad has made the supreme sacrifice. Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Counsel have received official notification from the Base Records that their son, Sergeant Wilfred J. Counsel attached to a machine-gun section was killed in France on April 11. He had been previously reported missing. Deep sympathy is expressed on all sides for the parents and family in the loss of a sterling son who was a general favourite with everyone. The late Sergeant Counsel fought through the Gallipoli campaign (where he was wounded), and afterwards in France (where he was again wounded) Enlisting a private, he rose to sergeant. Another son, Basil, was recently invlided home after two years service at the front.

The Examiner 4th September 1917
