WW1
Cranswick, John Stewart
Born 24th May 1896 Ulverstone Tasmania to Henry Walter Raleigh and Marion Isabella Cranswick (nee Anderson) a surveyor who embarked Hobart 20th October 1914 on board “HMAT Geelong” with the 12th Infantry Battalion. Lieutenant Cranswick was killed in action 13th January 1917 at Messines when he was hit by a piece of shell in the back and is commemorated in the Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France. His brother Lieutenant Thurstan George Cranswick was wounded at Clery Copse near Peronne France and invalided back to Australia where he died 18th November 1920 from tetanus. The sad intelligence received at Stanley yesterday of the death in action of Sergt Major Cranswick, son of Mrs. M Cranswick, cast quite a gloom over the township. The deceased soldier was in the Gallipoli campaign where he was wounded, and received an enthusiastic welcome home on August 17, 1915. After some months his arm recovered and he was appointed company sergeant-major in Claremont and left with the 40th Battalion. He was a very popular young man. His brother Corporal Thurston Cranswick who was in the Commercial Bank, Hobart, is fighting with the 10th. Examiner Launceston 2nd Feb 1917
