Dawson, Russell Harry Aubrey

 

 

Born 24th June 1878 Launceston Tasmania the son of William Charles and Elizabeth Dawson (nee Craw) married to Catherine Connors a carpenter he embarked Hobart 1st July 1916 on board “HMAT Berrima” with the 40th Infantry Battalion.

 

He was orderly to Dr W J Clarke and was also a member of the 40th Battalion band playing the kettle drum.

 

He was killed instantly 29th July 1917 at Messines Ridge where he was sitting in front of the dressing station and  was hit by a whizz bang shell and is commemorated in the Kandahar Farm Cemetery, Ypres, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

 

His son Alexander Dawson (No 2021) was killed in action 19th August 1916 and is commemorated on the  Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Villers-Bretonneux Area, France.
