Downie, David Norman Hedley
Born Glasgow Scotland the son of Thomas Downie of Barrack Hall Bellahouston Glasgow Scotland, a mining engineer working in Zeehan Tasmania he embarked Melbourne 22nd December 1914 with the rank of Corporal on the “HMAT Geelong” with the 3rd Field Company Engineers.He attained the rank of Sergeant before he was killed in action 31st May 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsula and buried in the Beach Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey. His brother Pte Alexander Downie who enlisted Victoria died 16th October 1915 at Warrnambool Camp of a haemorrhage and was buried in the Warrnambool Cemetery, Victoria, Australia. Universal regret was expressed (wires our Zeehan correspondent) on the receipt of the city newspapers announcing the death from wounds received at the Dardanelles of Corporal D. N. H. Downie. Deceased was a respected resident for over six years. He enlisted from Zeehan. He was admired on all sides as a versatile and clever young Scotchman. While at Broadmeadows he married Miss Mary Rippon a well known Victorian vocalist whom he met during one of her professional tours of the West Coast. Several telegrams of sympathy have been sent to his widow and the Iris Tennis Club courts were closed today in respect of his memory. Launceston Examiner 3rd July 1915
