Duckworth, John Henry

 

Born 21st August 1883 Hobart Tasmania  to Edward and Ann Duckworth (nee Holmes) and married to Mary Jane Thorne, a labourer he embarked Hobart 20th October 1914 on board “HMAT Geelong” with the 12th Infantry Battalion.

He served in Gallipoli and France where he was killed in action 23rd July 1916 and is commemorated in the Pozieres British Cemetery Ovillers-La Boisselle, France.

KILLED IN ACTION.

The Rev. H. Wilkinson, of Devonport had the sorrowful task yesterday of informing Mrs. Duckworth that her husband. Private John Duckworth had been killed in action in France on July 23. Pte Duckworth, who belonged to the 12th Battalion, was wounded in the landing at Gallipoli, and was invalided to England being in the Weymouth camp. He had recovered from his wounds and rejoined his unit in June since when he has made the supreme sacrifice for the Empire. He leaves a wife and seven children of whom one son is in Belgium with the 26th Battalion, and another expects to go to Claremont next week.
