Duff, Sidney John
Born 3rd October 1891 Sheffield Tasmania to David and Emily Jane Duff (nee Dyer) a farmer who embarked Melbourne 4th June 1915 on board “HMAT Ajana” with the 15th Infantry Battalion. He was killed in action 7th August 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsula and is commemorated in the No 2 Outpost Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
KILLED IN ACTION. The first fatality amongst the many who have enlisted from Penguin municipality was recorded in a cablegram received by the Rev. W. T. Abbott, Methodist minister, last evening which contained the information that Private Sydney Duff, of the 6th reinforcements of l6th Battalion of Infantry, had been killed in action at Silvia on August 8. Private Duff was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Duff, of the Nine-mile road, Howth, and left Penguin with a number of local recruits on May 19, and sailed from Melbourne on June 3rd. Much sympathy is expressed with the parents, brother and sisters of the deceased who was one of the first in the district to offer himself, and even though once turned down persevered and finally took his stand for the colors of his native State.
