Duffy, Erskine James Hilton

 

 

 

Born 1885 Evandale Tasmania the son of James Francis and Margaret Duffy (nee Smith) a labourer who embarked Hobart on board “HMAT Berrima’ with the 40th Infantry Battalion.

Lance Corporal Duffy was killed in action 9th April 1918 in France and was buried in the Mericourt-L'Abbe Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

News has been received of the death from wounds received in action of Private James Hilton Duffy.  Deceased was the eldest son of Mr James Duffy of Evandale and some years ago was well known in the north as a racing cyclist.  He enlisted at Burnie and was one of the original 40th Battalion having fought in almost the whole of the engagements which that gallant battalion has participated in.  Mr Duffy’s second son Bernard is still on active service with the engineers.
