Elliott Albert

 

Born 9th June 1885 North Motton Tasmania the son of William James and Mary Eliza Elliott (nee Dicker) a farmer he embarked Melbourne 22nd December 1914 on board “HMAT Themistocles” with the 9th Infantry Battalion. 

He died 8th November 1918 at Lamsforf in Germany whilst a prisoner of war and was buried in the Berlin South-Western Cemetery, Berlin, Germany. 

His brother, Pte Walter Wesley Elliott (No 3501) was killed in action 19th September 1918 in France and is commemorated in the Cerisy-Gailly French National Cemetery, Cerisy, Hamel Area, France. 

Military Medal  

At Dernancourt on 5th April 1916 these three men were attached as sappers and were working continuously under shellfire when enemy attacked in force, they took rifles and manned the trenches with infantry and materially assisted in keeping the enemy off, they worked valiantly for over three hours firing rifles and using bombs with great effect until all three were seriously wounded. Their brave bearing and gallant action at such a crisis is worthy of the best tradition of the army and they set a fine example to their comrades.
