Eltham, William Keith
Born 11th October 1886 Hobart Tasmania the son of William Cooper and Jane Colville Eltham (nee Lynch) a clerk in the City Engineers Department he embarked Hobart 20th October 1914 on board “HMAT Geelong” with the 3rd Artillery Brigade. He served at Gallipoli where he received a shrapnel wound to the mouth and on 19th April 1916 in France was promoted to corporal and on 17th May 1916 promoted to Lieutenant. He successfully represented Tasmania in cricket against England, South Africa, Victoria and New South Wales. He was also a noted artist and cartoonist. He died 31st December 1916 when a shell hit the trench in which he was resting and buried him. He was dug out and found to be dead. He is commemorated in the Guards Cemetery, Lesboeufs, Peronne, Picardie, France. Advice has been received at Hobart that Keith Eltham who was at the landing of Gallipoli and has since been at the front in France has been killed. Keith was a son of Mr William Eltham of the Audit Department and was a promising cricketer playing with West Hobart The Weekly Courier 18th January 1917
