Fleming, Cyril Charles
Born 21st January 1893 Moorina Tasmania the son of James and Maria Fleming (nee Walker) and married to Irene Lily Baylis with one child, a groom he embarked Melbourne 12th November 1915 on board “HMAT Orsova” with the 1st Australian Remount Unit. He was serving with the 2nd Mobile Vet Section Australian Army Veterinary Corps when he died 11th November 1918 at the 3rd Australian General Hospital from bronchial pneumonia and was buried in the Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Last week the residents of Gladstone were saddened by the news that Trooper Cyril C Fleming had died of bronchial pneumonia in the 3rd Australian Hospital France. The news came with a double shock as all were looking forward to seeing this gallant soldier return after three years service. He enlisted in September 1915 serving 18 months in Egypt and the rest of the time in France. Trooper Fleming leaves a widow and young son to mourn their loss, also father, mother and sisters and a host of friends. Trooper Fleming was 25 years of age at the time of his death. His people received letters regularly from him the last being dated September 10 and there was no preparation whatever for the sad news which reached them last week. Trooper Fleming was an only son. 37 men enlisted from Gladstone of whom 10 have made the supreme sacrifice The Weekly Courier 5th December 1918
