Fletcher Morris Cecil

 

 He was born 1882 Launceston Tasmania the son of William Frederick Fletcher, a cabinetmaker who embarked Melbourne 5th January 1916 on board “HMAT Afric” with the 12th Infantry Battalion.

He was killed in action 21st August 1916 at Pozieres and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.

Mr Stanley Fletcher of Upton Street Launceston has been notified by the Defence Department that his brother, Pte M. C Fletcher of the 12th Battalion had been killed in action.

Pte Flanagan, in writing from France says

“I saw him killed by a shell at Pozieres the second time we were there, viz August 21. He was on a ration party at the time, taking food up to the front line.”

Pte Fletcher was a son of the late Wm Fletcher and was well known in sporting circles. In 1911 he played with the Southern Lacrosse team against northern Tasmania and he was also an enthusiastic member of the Tamar Rowing Club.
