Fletcher, George Herbert

 

Born 1885 Launceston Tasmania the son of Charles Sydney and Sarah Fletcher (nee Higinbotom) a miner he embarked Brisbane on board “HMAT Aeneas” with the 26th Infantry Battalion. 

He was killed in action 29th July 1917 in France and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, France. 

Official intimation of the death of Pte G H Fletcher has been received by his relatives.  He had previously been reported missing during the battle of Pozieres on July 29th 1916.  He left Tasmania with the first contingent and was one of four brothers to enlist the three others still being on active service.  Private Fletcher saw service in Gallipoli, Egypt and France.
