FORSTER, CHARLES WALTER
Photo of 7987 Pte C.W. Forster of the 12th Bn AIF who was Killed in Action at Villers-Brettoneux on the 23 Sep 1918, aged 19 years.
Mr. and Mrs Forster of the Glebe, Hobart whose son Private Charles Walter Forster was killed in action on September 23, have received a letter written two days later from a companion in the same company, Keith Hibbard, who writes:-"Since Charlie came to France he had proved himself to be a brave lad and he did most excellent work in the firing line up to the time he was killed. Ho was out with several other men as a covering party while we were being relieved from the firing line. When the relief was taking place and they were about to come out, a shell landed right in amongst them, and they got the full force of it. The result was that one man was killed instantly, and another badly wounded. Charlie was also wounded all over from head to foot. When the stretcher bearers arrived on the scene, Charlie said to them that he had a 'sure Aussie,' meaning that he would be sure to get home; but unfortunately while he was being dressed he collapsed and died. I had known him for years, also Jack, whom I saw about ten months ago. We were together at Swan-Street Sunday school for years." The Mercury 25th November 1918
