Game, Sidney James

 

 

Born 27th July 1897 Emu Bay Tasmania to George John and Ellen Blackett Game (nee Young) a Bank Clerk he embarked Hobart 1st July 1916 with the rank of Corporal on board “HMAT Berrima” with the 40th Battalion

 Sgt Game was killed in action at Messines 7th June 1917 and is commemorated in the Strand Military Cemetery, Belgium.

On Friday evening the sad news of the death of Sergeant Sidney James Game, youngest son of Mr and Mrs. G. J. Game of Calder Road was received at Wynyard. He enlisted in January, 1916 as a private and after several months of training in Tasmania left as a corporal. Having been through several big engagements in France from December, 1916, he received his promotion to sergeant. Two other brothers Charles and Percy are with the forces located in England under training.- The only intimation received was from Private Groom (late of Wynyard) to deceased's brother Charles in London, contained in a cable reading:-"Sid killed grave carefully attended by comrades." It is sap posed his death occurred about the middle of June. He received his tuition in the Wynyard state school and Launceston Church Grammar School. He occupied a position in the National Bank at Wynyard.  Letters received this week mentioned that he had been in hospital suffering with slight sickness, but was back again in the trenches.
