Gatty Leonard James
Born 16 September 1897 Pontville Tasmania to Major James and Lucy Fitzjohn Gatty (nee Hall) an engineer’s fitter and only 16 when he enlisted he departed Sydney 18th October 1914 on board “HMAT Afric” with the 1st Field Company Engineers. He died of wounds 6th August 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsula and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey It was reported “Gatty went out in a charge on the German officer’s trench early in August and was killed. His body was seen by the men of his company on the parapet of the German officer’s trench. It could not be recovered. He was only a lad” Cpl W Gridland (No 209)
