GEALE, JOHN WILLIAM
Outdoor portrait of 5092 Private (Pte) John William Geale, 52nd Battalion, of Smithton, Tas. A farmer before enlisting in January 1916, Pte Geale left Australia for France with the 16th Reinforcements of the 12th Battalion in March 1916. Transferred to the 52nd Battalion in May 1916, he was with the battalion for less than two months before he was killed at Spoil Bank near St Eloi in Belgium on 15 October 1916, age 31 THE SUPREME SACRIFICE. Mr. WJ Geale and family received word from the Defence Department through Rev. Fletcher who broke the sad news to the family — that Private John Geale, eldest son of Mr W Geale, had been killed in action on October 15. Deepest sympathy is felt by all for the bereaved ones who are highly respected in this part. The deceased soldier was well and very favorably known throughout the district for his manly qualities He was a well known member of the local Rifle Club having been connected with the club for years, and was also one of its foremost shots. The shock was the more severe, as Mr. Geale had received a letter only on Friday night from Private Ern Geale stating that Jack was well. The North Western Advocate 5th December 1916
