Gilbert, William Ernest

 

Born 6th June 1881 Hobart Tasmania the son of Charles Henry and Rebecca Gilbert (nee Essen) married to Elizabeth Janet Absolom a farmer he embarked Melbourne 5th January 1916 on board “HMAT Afric” with the 12th Infantry Battalion.

 

He was killed in action 19th August 1916 in France and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux

 

ROLL OF HONOUR. GILBERT. -Killed in action in France, between 19th and 22nd August, 1916. Private William Ernest Gilbert, beloved son of the late Charles H. Gilbert and Rebecca Gilbert, of Glenorchy, aged 36 years. He leaves a wife and four children to mourn his loss. He did his duty.
