Gittus, Leslie Albert

Leslie Albert Gittus

 

 

Born 5th August 1892 Macquarie Plains Tasmania the son of George and Harriet Gittus (nee Higginson) of “Askrigg” Gretna a labourer he embarked Melbourne 25th October 1916 on board “HMAT Ulysses” with the 12th Infantry Battalion.

 

He was killed in action 3rd November 1917 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

 

Military Medal

During operations east of Hooge from 1st to 8th October Pte Gittus was in charge of a lewis gun team.  He occupied a very exposed post and sustained heavy …… .His post was many times damaged and he worked untiringly on its repair.  His coolness and devotion to duty encouraged the men.

 

His brother Pte Kenneth James Gittus (No 196) was killed in action 2nd April 1917 in France and is commemorated in the HAC Cemetery, Ecoust St Mein, Arras, France.
