Glover, George Frederick

 

Born 1896 Lefroy Tasmania the son of a William and Selena Glover (nee Hammersley)a labourer he embarked Melbourne 5th January 1916 on board “HMAT Afric” with the 12th Infantry Battalion.

He was killed in action 25th August 1918 in France when he was hit in the head by a sniper’s bullet and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.

 His brother Pte Jack Glover (No 6078) was also killed in action in France on the 5th May 1917 and he too is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.

 

The sad intelligence reached South Mount Cameron that George Glover aged 21 was killed in France on August 25. He enlisted on September 21, 1915. He was the fifth son of Mr. and Mrs Glover, two highly respected residents of South Mount Cameron. Mr. Glover is dead. .Mrs. Glover is residing now at the Tunnel. Of this patriotic family, four sons have enlisted. Two (Jack and George) have made the supreme sacrifice. Alfred has been wounded three times, and Leslie is in the fighting line. George was a very popular lad and worked on the Cliftons mine from a boy until he enlisted.
